Introduction

Since its founding in 1973, Browns has played host to thousands of brunches, lunches, afternoon teas, dinner parties and evening drinks for people around the UK in a relaxed yet vi...brant environment. Our bustling brasserie helps guests escape the everyday, any time of day whilst sipping on bespoke cocktails made with fresh ingredients or feasting on our delicious fresh produce food.

Our classic seasonal food and signature cocktails can be enjoyed all over the country in venues that are quintessentially British and rich in heritage. Many of Browns restaurants have made their home in unique landmark buildings with the beautiful surroundings hand picked for their historic or national interest. You can choose to lounge in Mayfair’s ex-gentlemen’s club or swat up on some history in Bristol’s beautiful old city museum; Browns on Woodstock Road in Oxford is even featured in the novel ‘Restless’ by William Boyd, which was the winner of the Novel Award in the 2006 Costa Book Awards.

Browns’ history is as colourful as our afternoon tea cake selection and as sparkling as our champagne collection. First established by millionaire Jeremy Mogford who opened the first Browns restaurant and Bar in Brighton all those years ago, he went on to establish a chain, opening other restaurants mainly in university towns such as Cambridge, Oxford and Bristol. This chain blossomed into a huge success, aided by Mogford’s reputation as an enlightened and honourable employer who had an incredibly low staff turnover rate. We like to work in Mogford’s image, which is what has fuelled our successful apprenticeship scheme.

Mogford and his restaurants have been used as a hospitality case study and entrepreneurship textbook illustrating what commitment to employees looks like. Similarily, Browns was profiled in a popular capacity management study for Cornell University’s ‘Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly’ journal.
