About this Event

An Evening of Music from the World of Film
Saturday 27 February 7:00pm
Tickets £12 - £20

Nottingham Youth Orchestra are celebrating 30 years of music making! The very first Nottingham Youth Orchestra was created by Derek Williams and the late Stephen Fairlie in 1985. How we have grown! There are now over 300 children involved in 5 orchestras, all under the umbrella of the NYO organisation. Training, Intermediate, Senior and two Jazz orchestras all belong to a fantastic musical family which has gone from strength to strength over the years.

Our anniversary concert features classical music which has been made famous in film. One of the highlights is Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No 2, which is inextricably linked to that much loved and admired cinema classic, Brief Encounter. We are thrilled to have the talented Nottinghamshire musician, Isata Kanneh-Mason, playing this piece. Isata was a category finalist in the BBC’s 2014 Young Musician of the Year Competition and was awarded the Walter Todds Bursary – allocated by the BBC to a performer who did not reach the Final but who showed particular promise. She is currently an undergraduate at the Royal Academy of Music, where she holds the prestigious Elton John Scholarship. Along with her talented siblings she recently participated in Britain’s Got Talent and the group stormed into the semi-finals.

The conductor, James Lowe, is an ex-NYO member and currently Artistic Advisor to the orchestra. James is the Chief Conductor of the Prussian Chamber Orchestra in Germany and the Vaasa Sinfonia in Finland. He balances his conducting schedule with his long-standing commitment to youth music
