The 11th-century Durham Cathedral sits on a rocky promontory that's almost completely surrounded by the River Wear. Make sure you visit the cathedral cloisters, where many scenes from the Harry Potter films were shot. Next to the cathedral is Durham Castle. It's now part of the university, so access is by guided tour only; these cost £5 and there are several each day. We also recommend a walk beside the River Wear to take in views of the cathedral and castle from below.
